Tectonic environment and seabed resources of the southern Okinawa Trough

The Okinawa Trough is a back-arc basin behind the Ryukyu trench-arc system and located along the eastern margin of the Eurasian continent. Based on geophysical and geological studies, the Okinawa Trough is considered in the rifting stage. Such a tectonic setting is characterized by development of normal faulting in brittle continental crust and frequent intrusion of a magma, which can be expected to provide favorable environment for development of a hydrothermal system. Recently, diverse microbial communities and other hydrothermal minerals have been discovered in the middle to northern Okinawa Trough. The southern area which is close to Taiwan has the topographically lowermost trough floor throughout the Okinawa Trough, suggesting a relatively more pronounced back-arc basin formation. However, restricted by the limited sampling and sequencing efforts, our understanding with regards to its marine environment and hydrothermal potential is poor. Supported by the Central Geological Survey, under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) in Taiwan, significant strides are being made in understanding the origin, distribution, and characteristics of hydrothermal deposits in the southern Okinawa Trough area. Integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and seafloor observation studies of background environment, would significantly promote our understanding of dynamic processes for formation and the quantification of these hydrothermal mineral deposits which could be used on future regional exploration.

Being aware of the importance of enquiring the related tectonic and environmental processes for the generation of hydrothermal mineral resources and its possible impact on the surrounding microbial communities, we propose the publication of a special issue on "Tectonic environment and seabed resources of the southern Okinawa Trough" which invites contributions of original research papers by experts from universities, research institutions, government, public and private sector organizations, and other earth scientists from all over the world. With this proposed special issue, we expected to have a general concept about the progress already carried out by the related research and to stimulate more multidisciplinary researches on hydrothermal potential in Taiwan.
