Exactly two years after the 2016 Mw 6.5 Meinong event, an Mw 6.4 earthquake occurred slightly offshore Hualien at about 18 km NNE of the Hualien city with a focal depth of 10 km on 6 February 2018 (23:50:42.6 local time). It is a moderate-sized event, however, produced strong shaking in the Hualien city, triggered and ruptured the Milun fault, and caused several buildings along the Milun fault collapsed and 17 death. Starting two days before the Mw 6.4 earthquake, more than 100 felt events with the largest Mw 6.0 quake occurred nearby the main event. Subsequently, significant number of aftershocks occurred both on-shore and off-shore Hualien city with focal depths mostly within the upper 10 km. The 2018 Hualien earthquake is the largest event occurred in this area since the 1972 Ms 7.2 Ruisui earthquake.
The scientific uniqueness and unexpected hazard along the Milun fault in the Hualien city drive us to better understand the nature of the 2018 Hualien earthquake sequence in both scientific and engineering aspects. We welcome contributions from field investigations, seismology, structure geology, geodesy, earthquake engineering, etc., and we aim at rapid publications of the results obtained right after the 2018 Hualien event.
