Tropical cyclone (TC) activity is most active in the western North Pacific. Its strong winds and prolong heavy rainfall impose significant threats to life and property in the heavily-populated East-Asian (EA) regions including coastal China and the island chain across Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. In view of the profound destructions caused by TCs on China and Taiwan, the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) has sponsored a three-year integrated project during 2014-2017 to engage cross-strait joint research efforts studying TC activity over the western North Pacific (WNP) and EA regions. TC influences on China and Taiwan were conducted by researcher from each side of the strait while TC variability over the NWP is jointly studied. The major research results delineate the effective modulations by large-scale climate variability on TC activity around China and Taiwan. Afterwards, continuous efforts from the meteorological community have been devoted to study detailed characteristics of TC variability and their relations to different scales of climate variability, across intraseasonal, seasonal, interannual, and interdecadal time scales. The modulating processes of intraseasonal oscillation (ISO), El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and decadal changes on TC activity (genesis, movement, rainfall) are investigated in depth. These efforts should produce further research accomplishments to provide advanced understanding of TC variability features and modulatory mechanism in the WNP. The scope of this special issue entitled "Tropical Cyclone Variability under Changing Climate" is to distribute the research findings for TC variability characteristics under the changing climate in the past decades. Result of these studies should provide useful information for improving TC predictions in the aspects of TC formation frequency, movement track, and consequent local rainfall. They also provide better understandings of the TC-climate interactions over the WNP region.
